I can just see my mom cringing over the fact I have finished my title with a preposition, but she shouldn’t blame me, she should blame Adele’s awesome song Cry Your Eyes Out for the inspiration! Crud! I did it again – completely got off track before I even launch into the primary topic! Thanks for your patience as always! Well Try January has come and gone. I’m going to plead the 5th on exactly how many wines I did try but suffice it to say the final weekend started with a Robert Foley Vineyards tasting at Ellerbe in Fort Worth, an extensive 4th Friday tasting event at Classic Wine Cellars and a celebration Saturday night. I totally lost count when the bottles on the table and counter at Classic topped 20+… Yes, it was a great weekend!
As February (and Year of the Tiger!) enters with great relief for those who were 100% in on dry January, I’d love to keep the the “Try” element at the forefront as it completely aligns with my quest to create wine nerds out of each and every person I meet! That includes YOU my friend! I have some great news I hope will encourage you to keep trying new and diverse wines whether that be exploring new varietals, new regions or even new styles within your standard all time favorite varietal. The beauty of going to a restaurant is the ”Wine by the Glass” section of the wine menu. Craving a crisp white with your salad or appetizer – great, there will be one on the list! Want to shift gears to a fruit-forward red with your main course – never fear there’s one of those on the list as well!
I’m dining in tonight, one bottle has to work with every course, right? NO!
Great news fellow wine lovers! The days of having to finish every bottle you open are long over – let the celebration begin! I, for one, used to lament having to put an open, but partially empty, bottle of wine in the refrigerator for any reason. This occurrence resulted in nightmares of oxidized, flat, dull and vinegary-tasting wines keeping me from entering my much craved R.E.M. sleep. Frightening I tell you! But my fear is no more as technology has not only made my iPhone camera absolutely fabulous, it has also provided fantastic options in the category of wine stoppers! And some of them are super cool and super reasonable from a $$ perspective. Let’s deep dive one of my favorites!
Tom Lutz, mad scientist and founder of Repour, has made our lives easy peasy and has paved the way for us to sip, swirl, swish and savor our way across multiple bottles without the guilt and maybe more importantly, without the hangover! Lutz informs, “Beyond traditional storage of opened bottles of wines, Repour will keep that opened bottle of wine fresh for days or even weeks, we’ve been surprised by how many people report having multiple bottles of wine opened at the same time. Say you’d like a glass of a certain wine before dinner and a different wine with dinner, with Repour, we find people now do both rather than picking a middle ground for the entire meal. Or perhaps there is a bottle left over from a previous night, but today a different wine is desired. Just leave the previously opened bottle stored with Repour and open a fresh bottle that meets your interest for tonight.” Count. Me. In!
Repour challenges the traditional notion of open a bottle and stay “on-it” until it’s empty. Lutz seals the deal with me even further by sharing ”just a few weeks ago my wife and I opened a bottle that didn’t fit well for us for dinner that night. We threw a Reour in the nearly full bottle and didn’t find the right opportunity to finish it until three weeks later, when it was still perfect and paired well with our dinner that night.”
January is behind us and the year ahead can be a magical exploration into the wild world of wine. Best yet, the pressure is off to polish off every bottle just because you popped the cork! Rip off that sparkly silver seal and shove a Repour stopper in the bottle then forget about it – for a few weeks anyway!
