Silver ghost 2014 napa valley Cabernet sauvignon

There’s something very supernatural about this Silver Ghost!

W.O.W. Week #5: 2014 Silver Ghost, Napa Valley

There is no denying ghosts, in particular Silver Ghosts, have legendary reputations. Rolls Royce introduced their infamous Silver Ghost in 1906 earning the automobile more than a century of acclaim. For those of you who are Xeelee space opera fans, you’ll recognize Silver Ghosts as floating silvery sphere aliens (gonna have to trust Fandom on this one!). Guess which of these served as inspiration for an amazing Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley?

If you guessed the automobile, you’re right! The winemaker, Weston Eidson’s great-grandfather who not only loved the 1909 version of the Silver Ghost, he had close ties to the company’s founders. Eidson not only creates wine magic for Silver Ghost, he also leads the winemaking for Montagu Wines, thoughtfully named after the same great-grandfather, John Montagu. Traditions run deep as does the focus of making legendary, thoughtful and age-able wines. I’m sure you can guess, my automobile budget cannot accommodate a Rolls Silver Ghost, but Silver Ghost Cabernet Sauvignon is surprisingly friendly on the wallet for being one of the consistently best cabs coming out of Napa Valley today!

Silver Ghost’s 2014 vintage is a hit with this group!

Not everything bigger is better!

Following on my W.O.W. episodes from the past two weeks, I continue my wine and food pairing adventures with Silver Ghost’s winemaker (Weston Eidson – Silver Ghost and Montague wines), a restauranteur (Richard King – Ellerbe Fine Foods), a chef (Chef Tim Prefontaine – Fort Worth Club) and a wine connoisseur (Walter Stucker). Utilizing the DOMSOM 6 S’s of wine tasting (sight / swirl / smell / sip / swish / savor), we deep dive this 8 year old vintage and give Chef Prefontaine some awesome suggestions on how to best pair this wine for the upcoming Wine for a Cause event! I’m personally a fan of Silver Ghost two ways – you’ll have to watch to find out what that means! Cheers!

Wine: Silver Ghost Cellars, Napa Valley

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Alcohol: 14.5%ABV

Aromos: Dark fruits, ripe cherries, smoke, herbs, chocolate.

Flavor: Black cherry, black fruits, chocolate cherry cordial candy, smoke, coffee, herbs and earthiness. Super soft tannins and an acidity which enhances ripe fruits without competing. Smooth, soft and integrated where flavors enhance each other for a fantastic expression of Napa Cab with subtleness versus in your face punch.

Food Pairings: Steak and cab. Cab and steak. There’s nothing more classic in the world of food and wine pairing than an amazing cut of prime steak with a Cabernet Sauvignon. Want to amp it up a bit? Take the cab and create a demi-glace out of it! Dark, unctuous, rich, savory and magical. Even this pescaterian’s mouth is watering just thinking about it!

WHERE TO BUY!: I’m sure you want to jump in your car and head out to buy some Silver Ghost asap! Who can blame you? It’s downright delicious! Obviously the SilverGhostCellars.com website is a great start. Other retail outlets include Specs, Total Wine and H.E.B. (for those Texans in the audience! If you cannot find it, make sure to pitch to your local wine shop owner to get on distribution!
