I’m happy drinking Mexican wine!

Daily(ish) Confessional: Mexican wine and I’m feeling fine!

I’m quite sure of two things – first you’re wondering if Mexican wine really is fine, and second, you’ve been waiting with baited breath for me to post another blog entry! I confess, I took a bit of a break recently. Without going into great and boring details, I went on a little jaunt to Cabo for some good ole R&R, golf and of course had to try the wine while I was there!

Now let’s be clear, this was not my first foray into Mexican wine. We go to Cabo nearly every year and I inevitably run out of my personal stash (wine travel cases are definitely worth purchasing!) so I must trudge around seeking replenishment. Where we stay, the markets only stock Mexican wines which is great! I truly applaud their commitment to buying local! However, the selection is very limited and as a lover of funky white wines, I typically am not wow’ed but rather satiated. This time, my experience was dramatically improved!

Mexican Viogner Fiano wine
Mexican wine makes me feel fine.

Thursday night is date night. Regardless of where we are, my husband and I hold true to date night since we met about 15 years ago. It may seem an old fashioned ritual, but it keeps us informed, connected and also gives us a venue to try new things from events, restaurants, cities and obviously wines. So Thursday night remains date night and when presented with the wine book (yes, book and not list), I headed directly to the Mexican wines! My palate and my husbands can vary dramatically on wine, but he’s always game to venture down new paths even if he ultimately isn’t as excited as I am about them. This time is a win for both of us!

My selection was a Viognier Fiano blend from Casa Magoni. While Viognier is traditionally associated with France, it has seen a resurgence in New World vineyards and I’m seeing more and more of it in new places. Fiano is typically associated with Italy, but let me tell you I LOVE FIANO (check out my previous W.O.W. on Falanghina a sister wine)! So seeing the two of these together quickly made my decision! This beauty was lush, full, fruity, fresh and complex all at one time and we both fell in love with it. Now the challenge is to see if we can find it in the good ole U. S. of A.!

Cheers my friends!
