Here’s a little wine for turkey

It’s that time of year again! Thanksgiving heralds in the holiday season and it’s time to pick your wine for turkey. No turkey (I can totally relate as a pescatarian), no fear! This is your chance to have a little fun, veer off the beaten path and do something a little wild and crazy! What do I have in mind, you ask? Read on!

Some wines have become synonymous with Thanksgiving. Pinot Noir for example. I, too, am a huge fan of a great Pinot. Old World Burgundian style with its earthy umami is fantastic with stuffings (or dressing if you’re so inclined) and anything with mushrooms. It’s the go-to for turkey both white and dark meat for sure. But hey, who says we have to follow traditions or rules? My family broke those years ago with steak, shrimp boils, cedar plank salmon and more!

What is the new wine for turkey?

Here’s my pick of the year for a fun alternate red for the table – Cru Beaujolais! Not the Beaujolais Nouveau I know we all drank on Nov. 17th, but the more serious kind. What exactly is a Cru Beaujolais? Great Question! To keep it simple, it is essentially a Gamay wine from one of the higher ranked regions in the Beaujolais region of France. Beaujolais is within Burgundy. These are the more serious wines which can often age for years. They always keep their fun, fresh, fruit forward style, just with a hint of glam. Check this article for more detail on the 10 official Crus of Beaujolais. The great news is most wine shops will carry a selection so pick up a few different bottles and enjoy with whatever you’re serving!

Valley Mills Vineyards Zephyr is my wine for turkey.

Another option may take some investigation or a quick chat with your local wine shop. This is a red blend with some fun and funky spice and fruit. I’ve been saving a bottle of Valley Mills Vineyard‘s Zeyphr for our table this year. I cannot wait to pop the cork! This light body Rhône style blend is driven by hibiscus, strawberry, cranberry, and red plum flavors. I can truly say it’s a beauty! This is for sure a wine for turkey or any other delight you choose to enjoy for Thanksgiving! Read my previous post when I got to actually help bottle the first release of Zephyr!

Whatever you choose, get creative, have a little fun and don’t forget to toast to an amazing celebration wherever you may be! I’m thankful to each and every one of you. Thanks for your support, your readership and for sharing your love of wine with me.

Cheers!
