Viognier (Viogn-yay), you make my day!

W.O.W. Wine of the Week: Viognier, Domaine Gassier 2019

Viognier, you make my day! Viogn-yay, you too make my day! What I once thought was syrupy and sweet, this week’s W.O.W. tasting has forever changed my mind. Crisp, dry, citrus, ripe and a whole lotta fun! And, tasting with Jennipher Walters at Underdog Wine in Kansas City, MO is absolutely fun fun fun!

I know you’ve read every one of my posts and listened to every one of my W.O.W. episodes so you’ll recognize the phrase ”sunshine in a bottle”. Well hello to yellow in this bottle! Jennipher shared her insights and background on this particular wine and what makes this wine so brilliantly colored. Twelve whole hours of skin contact! What, you ask? Typically white wines have little to no skin contact as the juice gets pressed out of the fruit at the very beginning of the wine making process. Not here, my friend. The winemaker instead chose to keep the skins and juice mingling like a massive fraternity keg party for hours. Color and complex flavors result from this creative approach. I’m a fan!

Hey, hey, hey it’s Viognier!

W.O.W. heads to France for a Viogn-yay adventure at Underdog Wine in KCMO

Details, details, details you know you want them!

Wine: Domaine Gassier, France

Varietal: Viognier

Vintage: 2019

ABV: 13.5%

Aromas: Juicy stone fruits, tangerine, nectarine, mandarin orange provide layer on layer of aroma. Ripe, juicy fruit aromas reminiscent of a summer picnic.

Flavors: While the aromas are ripe and juicy, the flavors while being off the same fruits, are just ripe with more tart and crisp notes versus juicy and deep. Not only does the 12 hour skin contact provide sunshine yellow color, it also builds complexity in the layers of fruit flavor. Balanced acidity and moderate alcohol make for a perfect blend of freshness lingering in your mouth.

Price: $15

If you’re ever in KCMO, you MUST head to Underdog Wine! Not only are they known for a fantastically curated selection of wines, they are super supporters of Try January (see my previous blog!) – my new favorite way to transition into the New Year! Jennipher and Ryan Sciara (owner) will absolutely take care of you! Let them know I sent you!

Cheers🍷
