So tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1995!

Party
Enjoying a 1995 Chateauneuf de Pape – a real treasure!

Dailyish Confessional: Party, party, party! When it comes to wine, many of us think of a formal dinner, a celebration, party or event. Wine becomes a key part of the celebration through toasts, food pairings or champagne towers. What’s sexier than a wine glass in the hand of a glamorous man or woman dressed to the nines? What eschews in the New Year more so than a coupe or flute of bubbles? It’s a match made in heaven!

Sometimes, wine celebrations do more than simply mark a key milestone, achievement, birthday, wedding or holiday. Other times they have a much deeper intention, a loftier goal, a higher calling. Sometimes wine events brIng people together with a philanthropic spirit to strive for change, a purpose, or even a cure. My husband and I are proud to serve on the host committee for one of these amazing charities, Wine for a Cause. After a 2 year hiatus, I’m super excite we get to hold our event April 2nd and get back in the game of raising money for critical children’s cancer research. Having raised more than $500k for Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, this organization is truly making a difference!

This year’s Wine for a Cause event brings back the infamous ”Battle of the Sommeliers”! Sounds fun, right? Well, for me it’s a bit nerve racking since I will be one of the Somms duking it out at the event! Along with Richard King (restaurateur and owner of Ellerbe’s Fine Foods), Weston Eidson (vintner and owner of Montagu Wines and Silver Ghost Cellars), Claire Gillette (Director of wine sales at Classic Wine), I’ll be representing DOMSOM wine education. Wish me luck!!! (Check out our Riesling tasting here!)

How can you join the party?

There are numerous charities receiving significant funding through wine. Food and Wine magazine frequently lists some of these organizations and it’s highly likely there are local charities in your own backyard using wine as a platform for philanthropic activities. This makes me proud to be part of an industry who strives for excellence not only from vineyard to bottle to glass, but to the communities and people within their circle of influence. You never know who may need a little support – financial, physical, emotional or in many other forms. And the wine industry time and again has raised it’s glass and raised its support to help.

Before I forget why I chose to modify Prince’s eponymous 1999 lyrics for the headline, one of our fellow host committee members popped the cork on an amazing 1995 CDP at our envelope stuffing meeting this past week and my crazy brain immediately transposed the lyrics. I guess you could say each sip was a party for my tastebuds! I confess, I am a nerd. What’d you expect?

Cheers to wine as a celebratory and philanthropic partner! May we raise our glass and open our hearts and pockets to those we can help and serve!
