This W.O.W. (Wine of the Week) has me swooning over Rosso di Montalcino!
Rosso, my rosso, why do I swoon over you my love? Duh! Because you are delicious and, compared to your high-falootin cousin Brunello, you’re super affordable! And did I mention, you’re younger too! What’s not to love?
This week, I’m joined by Chris Keel (owner of Put a Cork in It wine shop and VINITALY wine ambassador (one of only 290 in the world!)) to explore the lesser known cousin of Italy’s famed Brunello di Montalcino – Rosso di Montalcino. It’s luscious, it’s decadent, it’s juicy and it’s yum. I truly am swooning over this find. Perfect with any favorite Italian dish gracing your dinner table, it’s also easy on your pocketbook coming in at a third to a half of most Brunellos you’ll find on the market. This wine lover is a’swoonin and I’ll be packing home a few bottles of my own!
Details of my swoon over Rosso
Wine: 2017 Rosso di Montalcino, Poggio Nardone
Varietal: 100% Sangiovese
Origin: Montalcino, Italy, DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata)
ABV: 13.5%
Sight: Deep Ruby with pink on the edges, slightly translucent with no cloudiness, haze or sign of age.
Smell / Aroma: Aged 10 months in oak results in cedar, tobacco aromas blending with dark, jammy cherry, rose-like florals and herbs.
Sip / Flavor: Ripe red fruits including cherry and super ripe strawberry. Herbal, spicy with nice acidity.
Food Pairing: Pizza! Anything Italian as Sangiovese (most commonly found as Chianti named after the broader wine region) is one of the most versatile Italian reds.
Price Point: approx $25 – a great value compared to it’s older Brunello cousin!
If you are like me and have little, if any, patience this is your drink now Montalcino! Many Brunello di Montalcino wines need 10 or more years to mature according to most experts. This bottle is ready to be plunked into your shopping cart or bag and plopped onto your dinner table this evening! Enjoying W.O.W.? Please stay tuned for more W.O.W.
