W.O.W. Wine of the Week: 2018 Falanghina Rocco Dei Leoni, Villa Matilde
Falanghina, my lovely, my nectar, my new-found friend! It’s lovely to drink ya! And even better, to do so with an Italian wine expert. Chris Keel (owner of Put a Cork in It wine shop and VINITALY wine ambassador (one of only 290 in the world!)) and I popped the cork on this southern Italian beauty and dove deep into everything this wine has to offer.
Details of our love affair
Wine: 2018 Falanghina Rocco Dei Leoni, Villa Matilde
Origin: Campania, Italy, IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta)
ABV: 12.5%
Sight: Bright yellow, no cloudiness, haze or sign of age.
Smell / Aroma: Bold aroma enhanced by swirling the wine in the glass. Honeysuckle and herbal, ripe white peach, citrus – orange all intense and well blended.
Sip / Flavor: Just ripe white peach, citrus notes of nectarine, honeyed but not sweet. Balanced acidity and a lush wine for the lower alcohol. Lingering flavors and complexity.
Food Pairing: Pizza! Any pasta with light tomato sauce, summer salads with seafood or lightly seasoned roast chicken and vegetables.
Price Point: approx $18 – a great value wine!
If you have not taken your wine shopping on a trip to Italy to explore all the amazing white wine varietals Italy has to offer, head on down to your local wine shop, or over to Put a Cork in It and grab a few!
