Dailyish Confessional: Did I cheat? Or did I not cheat? Oh the question is burning and I don’t have the answer! Cheat on what you ask? Painful as it is, here is my story…
As you know, since you’re loyal readers and watch every one of my W.O.W. Wine of the Week episodes (yes, that is a guilt trip), I’ve been covering the 4 wines for Wine for a Cause. Riesling, Brunello, Cab and Carcavelos. Car-ca-what? Oops, you’re caught if you asked that questions! This year’s theme for our charity wine dinner was Battle of the Sommeliers. Yours truly made the cut and after grueling deliberation with myself, I chose the Carcavelos. Simply put, I love dessert wine and this beauty was one of the most unique I’ve been blessed to try! Who could resist!!!???
Saturday night was the big event. Donned in our finery, we all looked smashing with hopes of raising real money for a really important cause – children’s cancer research. The room was buzzing, the champagne flowing and it was time to execute my plan. Pre-game, I trolled the crowd petitioning for votes unrelentingly. “I have the most unique dessert wine and it is magically paired tonight.” ”Vote for me or I’ll stalk you!.” ”We all love dessert so why not vote for the dessert wine?” Anything I could think of, I bribed and bartered soliciting votes.
This is how it all went down. Did I cheat?
During the dinner, each of us presented our wine and food pairings to a roaring crowd not really paying as much attention to us as we imagined, but enraptured none the less. Gorgeous color, nuanced aromas, complex flavors and on and on we tomed. I was the final somm to present so my chances to get the crowds attention were greatly diminished by multiple glasses of wine. Nonetheless, I pressed on and pitched my wares like a champ.
At the end of the event, our host called us back on stage and my heart was beating louder than the overtly raucous crowd. Drumroll please……! Me, little ole me? I won? Are you serious? Woo Hoo! I was so excited – so excited in fact I announced to the entire audience that I had, in fact, cheated in order to win! But did I really cheat? Or did I just play the game slighly better than the competition? I’ll stick with the later – I’ve got the saber to prove it!
Jury is still out – it’s up to you to decide!
Cheers!
