I love the story this bottle tells

With the last drop of wine from every bottle, a story can be told.

Well hello stranger! I know I have not been very present over the past few weeks, but have no fear, I’ve been gathering many stories with many bottles! Let’s take a little trip all the way back to October 2022 where my bottle story begins. While a seemingly innocuous month for many, it was a big month for me in so many ways. Thankfully, with the help of a lot of amazing friends and family, it was one of the most memorable.

So what does all this have to do with wine, stories and bottles? Everything! As you know from my last blog, October started off with a trip to Sedona to visit friends and play a few rounds of golf. Right smack dab in the middle of our trip was our 10 year anniversary. Here’s where the bottle stories begin. 10 long years ago on a wine trip (there we go again!) to Napa, our day of tasting amazing wines at Marston, Kelly Fleming, Brian Arden and more ended with a diamond ring on my finger. WOW, how do you top that trip?!!! You buy a bottle of Fisher Vineyards Wedding Vineyard cab and put it in your wine locker for 10 years – that’s how!

Fischer Vineyards Wedding Vineyard Cab
Wedding Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Fischer Vineyards holds a bottle story of love!

Opening a special bottle of wine with the ones you love to celebrate a milestone (I’m always up to write about one!), a birthday or a simple Friday night is bound to end with stories and memories to last a lifetime. We popped the cork on our special bottle with amazing friends and cheers-ed to many more years of love, laughter and hope. At the end of the bottle, we realized our story has many more chapters to be written.

Some bottles end with a sour story!

Not all of my October celebrations were joyous. On Oct. 8, 2021, I lost my rock, my partner in crime, my dirt loving gardener. My dad. One year. One long year and I still miss him more than ever. But so many memories I have with him end with an empty bottle. And I’m not talking about good ones either!

My dad and wine were obviously never a good mix! One of my favorite stories at the end of a bottle happened over a family holiday meal several years ago when my dad presented me with a bottle of wine he could not wait to have me try. Picture this. A 1991 Missouri peach wine with foil over the top of the bottle as the cork had been pulled years ago. Who actually knew how long before! Not only was this a mystery, but the wine had actually been moved from the house I grew up in several years prior. No one could explain why or how it made the cut. But here we were, with a glass of vinegar and a whole lot of howling laughter. The bottle obviously ended up down the sink, but the story continues to be told.

October continued with more golf, more friends and way more wine – about 20 bottles in the recycle bin after my husband’s best friends from decades gone by descended on our house for a reunion. Apparently the group has matured beyond 12 packs of beer and my wine refrigerators took quite the hit! Stories, some of which will never be told outside the walls of our house, flowed freely over bottle after bottle of wine. We’re still trying to figure out where the cat came from (inside joke!)! More bottles ending in more stories celebrating friendships for a lifetime.

Other stories are sweet!

Back to Kansas City for this Missouri girl for another story which began when three 8 year old girls met and forged a bond which miles and miles and years and years will never sever. My life long bestie’s oldest son’s wedding – the first and the transition from dorky kids, to crazy teens, to young couples, to mommy-hood, to mother of the groom. We’ve been through it all together and the stories and memories flowed out of a few bottles of wine as we celebrated yet another stage of our friendship. Magical.

I have so many more October stories to be told, but think I’ll end on this one. Wine can be so many things. An adventure, a celebration, a simple Tuesday night dinner. But at the end of ever bottle is a story. Pop a cork and write a few of your own today!

Cheers!
